The caravan owner, a judge of cattle, selects the bull; the bull will not be dragged along until the owner promises wages of two pence per cart, a thousand pieces total.
After being promised a thousand pieces, the bull refuses to let the caravan continue when only five hundred pennies are paid, and moves only after the full sum is tied around his neck.
