In the east, where the rainbow does not enclose the picture, two bluebirds stand with wings outstretched, facing one another. The passage calls the bluebird a morning herald, sacred, a source of feathers for plume sticks, and a guardian at the door of the gods' house.
The two bluebirds are said to stand guard at the door of the house where the gods dwell, and are represented at the eastern opening of the picture.
