    Similar separated-band stories are said to be common: a Kiowa chief led people away after a game dispute, a Tonkawa band was cut off by sea incursion and moved toward Mexico, and Tuscarora crossing the Mississippi by grapevine were divided when the vine broke.

    The Tuscarora example describes people crossing the Mississippi by grapevine; when the vine broke, those on the far side wandered off and eventually became enemies of those on the eastern bank.
