Every five years the Son of Heaven tours the fiefs; in the second month he goes east to Mount Tai, burns wood, announces his arrival to Heaven, sacrifices to hills and rivers, gives audience, investigates elders, orders poems and price lists presented, and standardizes rites, time, music, measures, and clothing.
The ruler visits Mount Tai in the east and then the mountains of the south, west, and north in specified months, observing the same ceremonies at each quarter.
