  • The Maya Chronicles THE CHRONICLES. / THE CHRONICLES. / SYNOPSIS OF MAYA CHRONOLOGY. / I. THE SERIES OF THE KATUNS.; lines 2212-2307 confidence: medium

Tradition says Mani was founded after Mayapan’s destruction; Mayapan fell in a feud between the Cocoms and Xius/Tutul Xius, after which the Xius slew Cocom members, left the site, moved south, and founded Mani, glossed as “it is past” or “let us start anew.”

The passage narrates the destruction of Mayapan, abandonment of the site, southward movement, and establishment of Mani as a new capital whose name is glossed as a fresh start.
