The Iliad THE REDEMPTION OF THE BODY OF HECTOR. / CONCLUDING NOTE. / A. POPE / END OF THE ILIAD; lines 23698-23815 confidence: high
Thetis, daughter of Nereus and Doris, was courted by Neptune and Jupiter; because her son would surpass his father, she was wed to mortal Peleus; she shapeshifted to elude him, tested children by fire, and made Achilles invulnerable by Styx water except at the heel.
Thetis' children are said to be destroyed by fire through her attempts to see whether they were immortal.
