The Koran (Al-Qur'an) PUBLIC SERVICES, / AND EMINENT LITERARY ATTAINMENTS, / THE TRANSLATOR. / PREFACE; lines 13289-13435 confidence: high
The woman in whose house Joseph lives desires him, shuts the doors, and summons him. Joseph refuses. At the door she tears his shirt from behind and accuses him; a family witness says the direction of the tear determines who is truthful, and the shirt is seen torn behind.
Joseph rejects the woman’s solicitation, and the direction of the tear in his shirt becomes the sign by which truth is judged.
